Arthur George Georgopoulos, age 86, of Battle Creek, Iowa, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025, at UnityPoint Health–St. Luke's in Sioux City, Iowa.

Arthur was born on February 4, 1939, in Mitchell, South Dakota, to George and Anna (Gaveras) Georgopoulos. From a young age, he demonstrated a quiet strength and creative spirit that would guide him throughout his life. After high school, he proudly served in the United States Air Force, an experience that shaped his sense of duty, discipline, and service to others.

He earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in Art Education and a minor in English from Dakota Wesleyan University and went on to complete a Master’s Degree in Art from the University of Minnesota. Arthur spent his career as a dedicated high school teacher, sharing his love for the arts with generations of students. He was respected by colleagues and deeply appreciated by his students for his thoughtful guidance and steady presence.

While attending college, Arthur met Donna Louise Herrick in the art department at Dakota Wesleyan. Their shared passion for creativity and teaching blossomed into a lifelong partnership. They were married on December 28, 1969, in Mitchell, South Dakota, and began their life together in Bloomfield, Nebraska, where they started their teaching careers and raised their family. In 1987, they moved to Battle Creek, Iowa, where Arthur became involved in the community and served as a volunteer emergency medical technician. Donna and Arthur shared 53 years of marriage, collaborating on community projects, supporting one another’s work, and building a home filled with warmth and purpose. He was still active in the American Legion.

Arthur was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who cherished time with his family. He is survived by his four sons: George (Joni) of Correctionville, IA; Mark (Stacy) of Sioux City, IA; Nicholas (Cassie) of Cary, NC; and Andrew (Christina) of Ankeny, IA. His grandchildren include: Taylor (Frankie), Alysa, Dylan (Stephanie Meyers), Jackson, Constantine, Kostadinos, Theoditis, Kyriakos, and Spyridon. He was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Clio and Demi; sisters Kalley (Mark) Johnson and Stella (Fred) Trieber both of St. Paul, MN; brothers-in-law Tom (Cindy) Herrick of Anthon, IA, and Bob Herrick of Emery, SD; sisters-in-law Judy (John) Magstadt of Mitchell, SD and Frances “Tink” Sharp of Fullerton, NE; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Donna Georgopoulos; parents George and Anna Georgopoulos; brother John Georgopoulos; parents-in-law Howard and Josephine Herrick; brother-in-law Larry “Bird” Sharp; and sister-in law Sharon Herrick.

Arthur was known for his quiet intelligence, steady character, and the gentle joy he brought to everyday life. Though soft-spoken, he had a wonderfully goofy sense of humor that delighted his family and friends. He was deeply engaged in his community through his service as a volunteer EMT and as an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek. His life was one of service, creativity, and humble generosity.

“We were deeply saddened to hear of Art’s passing. He was truly a remarkable person, and we feel fortunate to have had so many wonderful memories with him over the years.

Whether it was catching him on a ladder—still full of energy even in his later years—and insisting he come down, or seeing him light up as he came over to give the kids treats whenever they were outside, every interaction with Art was filled with kindness and good spirit. He had a way of making every moment feel personal and warm.

We regret that we weren’t able to attend the visitation, but please know our thoughts and hearts were with you. Art will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

“All I can say is What a guy!! He was such a love. Reminded me that if things were turned around Donna would be my step mom because she really enjoyed being with dad. But then we would say that we had each other and he would just giggle!! ”

“Mr. George (as we affectionately called him in Jr. High Art) was a great teacher! He made his art classes interesting, and for us non-artistic types, achievable. George, Marco and families, our deepest condolences.”
