Henry Glen Brueck was born June 17, 1940 in Battle Creek, Iowa. He was the eldest of three children born to John Henry, Jr. and Violet Dawn (Elderkin) Brueck.  He was baptized April 6, 1941 and confirmed April 5, 1953 in the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek where he was a member for over seventy years.

He graduated from Battle Creek High School with the class of 1958 where he enjoyed a successful basketball career and sang in the choir.  He attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion for one year, and then transferred and graduated from the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana with a business degree. He returned to Battle Creek and began farming, working with his father for several years and then forming a partnership, Brueck & Son.

On June 8, 1968, he married Dixie Lee Schmidt in the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek. They owned and operated the family century farm northwest of Battle Creek, Dallstead Farm, from 1968 until his death.  They raised corn, soybeans, hay and had a cow/calf operation. Henry and Dixie relocated to Holstein, Iowa, in March of 2022.

Henry was active in his church where he served as an Elder, Trustee, Deacon, Sunday School teacher and on the Men’s Council.  He was a member of the Battle Creek Lions Club, served on the Farm Bureau Board, the Ida Services Incorporated board and the Ida County Cattlemen’s board.  He especially enjoyed his Masonic work in Perseverance Lodge #446 A.F. & A.M.  The Lodge merged in 2006 with Alpine Lodge #471 in Holstein.  He served as Worshipful Master four different years and received his fifty year membership certificate in 2013. He was also a member of the Sioux City Consistory and the Abu Bekr Shrine Hospital Dads unit.  This unit assists children and their families with free transportation to a Shriner’s hospital for free medical treatment.

Henry enjoyed many annual Canadian fishing trips with his father, brother and other relatives and friends. He enjoyed traveling around the United States with his wife, Dixie, by car, train, boat, bus and air.  He also cut and burned a lot of wood in their big farm house.  And, he enjoyed movies, music and reading many, many books. He was often referred to by his wife as a ‘walking encyclopedia’ of information.

He was preceded in death by his parents in 1992 and 2001, his father-in-law Richard Schmidt (1987) and mother-in-law, Bette Schmidt (2013) and step mother-in-law Sandy Schmidt (2006), and sister Mary Jo Watson (2024), and brother-in-law, Larry Watson (2025), niece Rachelle Schmidt (1999) and niece-in-law Amy Schmidt (2020).

He leaves to mourn his wife Dixie, a brother Robert Brueck (Cindy Tyler) of Camdenton, Missouri, three sister-in-laws Susan Schmidt (Dennis Little), Des Moines, Betsy Dettman (Marvin), West Des Moines, Marianne Schmidt, Catskill, New York, and three brother-in-laws Richard (Judy) Schmidt, Ida Grove, James Schmidt, Ida Grove, and John Schmidt (Deb Wiley), Des Moines. Also five nieces: Tammy Ryan, Marci Watson, Jennifer Chesney, Heather Hill and Holly Garcia and seven nephews: Stefan Brueck, Kevin Schmidt, James-Simon Schmidt, Heath Hinkhouse, Jared Schmidt, Michael Schmidt and Tristan Schmidt.

Memorials may be direct to the family. Donations will go to support the Abu Bekr Shrine Transportation Fund or the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church renovation project.

“Henry, who was always "Snookie" to me as kids, grew up together in Battle Creek. My most fond memories were all the games we played in their block, including Kick The Can, Annie Annie Over & any type of ball games. I also enjoyed the trips to Omaha with Henry and his dad to get Caterpillar parts and going out on the construction sites with them to watch and listen to those big Cats moving earth. That is where I first learned that you could throw snake eggs against the Cat blades and they would bounce back, rather than break! Ok, one last story I need to tell: As young, naive kids we were smoking cigarettes from time to time and in such a small town where everybody knows everybody it was hard to find a place to hide your cigarettes and smoke them without getting caught. We decided an old broke down truck out in the bone yard by the family construction shop was perfect. We used that truck often until one day when we were both inside and I opened the glove box to get out our stash I broke open a hornets nest and we both received many nasty stings that were pretty hard too explain to our parents! Henry was a great friend. We grew apart as adults because I was living in other states, but on the few encounters we had on my visits to Battle Creek it was almost like time had stood still. I know he is in a better place now and I wish Dixie and their family and friends all the best.

“I have a heavy heart knowing that Henry is no longer with us here on earth, but I am happy for him as he has entered into Gods world...Luke 23:43

“Jesus answered him, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.'”

My heart is with the Family as is my understanding.
