Ruth Jeniece (Patten) Hoferman was born on a farm seven miles south of Alta on August 15, 1935. She was the only daughter of James Allen and Florence (Barnard) Patten. Ruth attended Maple Valley Country School through the fourth grade and then Alta Community School, where she graduated in 1953.

Ruth attended Drake University for one year before returning home to marry and start a family. She married her high school sweetheart, Clinton Hoferman, on September 19, 1954. In their early years together, Ruth was a dedicated farm wife, supporting her husband while raising their four daughters. She could often be found driving a tractor, helping pull a calf, or butchering chickens, never hesitating to do whatever needed to be done.

Later, Ruth returned to college and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Buena Vista College in 1972. Following graduation, she taught vocal music for more than 25 years in Albert City, Aurelia, and Alta. Music was always major part of Ruth’s life, beginning when she served as a church organist in junior high and continuing well into her 80’s. She also taught piano lessons to many young aspiring pianists.

Ruth was a member of the Assemblies of God Church in Truesdale and Storm Lake for many years, as well as the United Methodist Church in Alta. She served as pianist, organist, choir director, and contributed in numerous other ways throughout the years. She also shared her musical talents by entertaining at area nursing homes and for senior citizens, and served as a musician for the VFW Ladies Auxiliary locally, State of Iowa, Big Ten Conference, and the National VFW Auxiliary.

In her later years, Ruth remained close to family, living at Autumn Glen Senior Living in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, where she enjoyed playing piano for weekly hymn sings whenever possible. In September of last year, she moved to Tucson, Arizona, where she spent her final months with her daughter and son-in-law Joan and Roger.

Ruth and Clinton were married for 63 years when he passed away in May 2018.  The family loved to see them dance together at weddings, because they were often the last one standing during the Couples dance.  They were blessed with four daughters, Diane (Bruce) Radke of Clinton, Iowa, Joan (Roger) Pence of Tucson, Arizona, Colleen (Barry) Sharp of Rogers, Minnesota and Lisa (Troy) Miranowski of Coon Rapids, Minnesota.  Ruth has 11 grandchildren: Christopher (Courtney) Radke, Joshua (Stephanie) Radke, Meghann MacKinnon, Jason (Hollie) Miska, Andrea (Brandon Pufall) Miska, Clinton (Addie) Sharp, Matthew Sharp, Rachael (Jake) Hintz, Anthony (Jenny) Miranowski, Connor (Meagan) Miranowski, and Tayhler Miranowski.  Ruth also has 30 great grandchildren and one great, great granddaughter.

Ruth is survived by her daughters and their families, her sister-in-law Margie Hoferman, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Rev. Robert and Donna Strand, many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Clinton Hoferman, her parents, James and Florence Patten, her in-laws, Leo and Mamie Hoferman, her brothers Kenneth (Darlene) Patten, Thomas (Joyce) Patten, Neil (Pat) Patten, and Doug (Virginia) Patten, her in-laws Boyd (Marilu) Hoferman, and Duane Hoferman.

Mrs. Hoferman inspired us, skillfully guided and taught us, encouraged us and supported us in all of the best ways.

I remember that humble choir room tucked away in the basement of our Albert City-Truesdale Community School. It served us very well to be undistracted by windows, busy hallways and neighboring classrooms. She made music transcend the space.

Mrs. Hoferman expected cooperation, but in a way appropriate to the quality of her character and dedication. She quickly offered a warm and welcoming smile and demonstrated a cheerful readiness to keep on task. As we gathered after our lunch hour for daily rehearsals, we started with our warm-up, "Lah-bay-dah-may-me-pou-toooooooooooo", followed by an wonderful array of her well-selected numbers for us to rehearse. There were so many performances, from Christmas concerts, to contest pieces, and everything in between.

Often a choir song will still come to mind, taking me back to those formative years. While we didn't realize it at the time, Mrs. Hoferman was teaching us much more than music!

Our sympathy to her family. She was such a gift! ”

“Deepest sympathy to Ruth's beautiful, large family, whom I only know thru my dear, delightful friend & sister in Christ Diane Radtke. No doubt you all will forever miss your precious Mom/grandma in this earthly life, but you'll enjoy a grand reunion one day together in heaven, with your loving, Godly parents, & family, rejoicing in the presence of Jesus! I regret I'm unable to travel the distance to Alta to pay my respects, thus am composing this message instead. May your treasured memories of your mom, & her legacy of love, music & her sweet Christ-like spirit be an ongoing comfort & treasure to you during this difficult time & in the days to come. LUV to hear Diane's stories & speak of her amazing sisters & family & would one day love to meet you all, but maybe on the other side...may our Lord continue to guide, direct, use, bless & keep each of you for His Purpose & Glory to be manifest! Amen!????????”

“My sympathy is extended to Ruth's family. When teaching in Battle Creek, I became acquainted with Ruth through the Northwest Iowa Choral Directors. We would often carpool to the ICDA summer convention held in Mason City. During those rides, we spent many hours discussing music, life in rural Iowa, and the joy of family. I remember Ruths' priceless smile and the compassion she shared (in her very soft spoken voice) with all those she came in contact with. Her talent and love of music, is a gift which has gone with her to her Eternal Home, for the choirs of angels to cherish! ”

“My heart goes out to the whole family on Ruth’s death. “Mrs. Hoferman” was my favorite teacher at Albert City-Truesdale High School and Music was my favorite activity. She was soft spoken but respected by everyone. We had many new opportunities in music performance and developed many great memories. Here’s hoping that your memories of her give you some comfort in the time to come. ”

“To the Ruth Hoferman Family,
I have fond memories of both Ruth & Clint from back in the '60's working for them part-time running Clint's tractor applying anhydrus amonia fertilizer. It sparked a life-long friendship with our family with many treasured memories.
The Lord blessed us knowing them both as they shared their many talents. May our Lord and Savior bless and comfort you all as you celebrate their life, they both were great people.”
