Herbert H. Hein, age 82, of Battle Creek, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at the Willow Dale Wellness Village of Battle Creek, Iowa.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Ida Grove, Iowa. The Father Richard D. Ball will officiate. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery of Ida Grove with Military Rites conducted by the Maple Valley Post No. 364 of the American Legion of Battle Creek, Iowa. Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2014 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a Vigil Service held at 7:00 PM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Ida Grove, Iowa. Born May 21, 1932, in Battle Creek, Iowa, Herbert Henry (Herb) was the son of Frank and Effel Hein. He was the oldest of five children and worked on the family farm after completing his country-school education.
On June 9, 1952, Herb married Rose Stapleton at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove. The couple made their home in Battle Creek with their three children, Marc, Michael, and Pamela. Herb farmed his entire life and in later years worked on local construction crews.
Herb served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He was active in and a past Commander for the American Legion Post 364 in Battle Creek. He also was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove.
Together with Rose, Herb enjoyed square dancing, attending his children’s and grandchildren’s activities, and spending early mornings socializing with friends over coffee. He was a member of the Battle Creek Booster Club and volunteered by calling Bingo at Willow Dale.
Survivors include three children, Marc (Michelle) Hein of Sioux City, Michael (Judy) Hein of Morris, MN, and Pamela (Bartholomew) Eisfelder of Evanston, IL; seven grandchildren, Remington Hein (fiancée Jordan Henningfeld) of Sioux City, Kaley Hein of Sioux City, Tyler Hein of Morris, MN, Deidre Hein of Seattle, WA and Danton Hein of Fargo, ND, Noah and Margaret Eisfelder both of Evanston, IL; a great-grandchild, Hayden Hein; three sisters, Betty Newman and Irene (Dick) Harris, all of Sioux Falls, SD, and Phyllis (Gilbert) Davis of Arthur; a sister-in-law, Ellen (Mike) Furlich of South Sioux City, NE; as well as nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Rose, and one sister, Evelyn Bruhn.
