In Memory of Vernon M. Zobel
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Ida Grove, Iowa. The Reverend Richard A. Salcido and Reverend Adam J. Peck will officiate. Burial will be in Ida Grove Cemetery of Ida Grove, Iowa. Military Rites will be conducted by the McNamara Moore Post No. 61 of the American Legion. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, June 16, 2014 at the Christensen-Van Houten Funeral Home of Ida Grove, Iowa. Vernon M. Zobel was born on January 31, 1932 to Louis and Anna (Schwenk) Zobel in Newhall, Iowa. He was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Newhall, Iowa on February 21, 1932. Later on the family moved to a farm by Arthur, Iowa. Vernon was confirmed on March 25, 1945 in the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Ida Grove, Iowa. Vernon attended school and graduated from Arthur High School in 1950.
Vernon married Marlene Walter of Ida Grove in the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Ida Grove on March 17, 1957. They made their home in Ida Grove. The couple were blessed with two children; Brad and Brenda.
Vernon served in the US Army in Korea from 1953 to 1955 when he was honorably discharged. Following his military service, Vernon worked for United Builders as a building construction supervisor. He usually worked building schools, churches and hospitals, but helped complete projects in the area such as the Ida Grove Elementary School, Horn Memorial Hospital, Morningside Care Center, St. Paul Lutheran Church, and the Battle Creek High School. Vernon also enjoyed projects such as fixing many windows.
When United Builders closed, Vernon managed all of the apartments in Zobel’s addition. Along with mowing many lots which he really enjoyed for many years before he retired.
Vernon enjoyed camping, fishing, visiting or helping family. Some of his favorite times were going to his children’s and in later years, his grandchildren’s many sporting events.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marlene Zobel of Ida Grove, Iowa; children, Brad (Jackie) Zobel of Ida Grove, Iowa; Brenda (Bruce) Moody of Elkhart, Iowa; grandchildren: Ashley, Austin Zobel of Ida Grove, Iowa, Jaden, Jenna Moody of Elkhart, Iowa; brother, Victor Zobel of Ida Grove, Iowa; sister-in-laws, Beth Zobel of Yorkville, Ill., Elaine Zobel of Northfield, Minn.; brother- in- law, Darwin (Maxine) Walter of Ida Grove, Iowa; sister-in-law, Janet (Craig) Rupert of Ida Grove, Iowa; sister-in-law Judy Krenk of Council Bluffs; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Anna Zobel; brothers: Edgar, Walter, Milton and Marlin; and sisters: Ruth, Lydia and Lusann.
