Elizabeth F. “Liz” Rice, age 84, of Battle Creek, Iowa passed away on Sunday, August 10, 2014 at the Horn Memorial Hospital of Ida Grove, Iowa.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 18, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek, Iowa. The Reverend Kevin J. Freese will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery of Battle Creek, Iowa. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., on Monday, August 18, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek, Iowa. Per Liz’s wishes, her body has been cremated. The Christensen ~ Van Houten Funeral Home of Battle Creek, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Elizabeth (Liz) Faye Rice was born October 24, 1929 in Webster City, Iowa to George and Chlista (Willson) Wilson. At the age of four she moved with her parents to a farm near Blairsburg, Iowa. She Graduated in 1947 from Blairsburg Consolidated Schools.

In June of 1948 she married James (Jim) Carroll Rice at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple were blessed with a son, Michael. For a short time the family lived in Eagle Grove, Iowa and Shenandoah, Iowa before they moved to Battle Creek in 1951.

Liz worked for Iowa Public Service for 10 years. Liz enjoyed working with young people as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, she was a Cub Scout Den Mother, adult leader for the American Legion Junior Auxiliary, and a 4-H leader. She helped some young couples by babysitting their children.

Liz was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek, Iowa, the American Legion Auxiliary, B.C. Woman’s Club, Medical Services, and several card clubs. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her family.

Left to cherish her memories are her son, Michael (Shannon) Rice of Omaha, Nebraska; two grandchildren, Keri (James) Boehm of Omaha, Nebraska; Timothy (Tracie) Rice of West Des Moines, Iowa; four great grandchildren who called her Gigi, Alex, Drew, Briana, Bailey and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim, two sisters, and two brothers.

“Liz was such a nice and cheerful lady, I'm sorry to hear of her passing. I got to know her at various family events over the years (my great gma is Juanita). I won't ever forget that when I graduated High School she sent me the neatest handmade note cards for future use, which I was so excited to find reasons to send hand written messages to family as I left for college. Our thoughts and prayers are with Liz's family and friends. ”
