Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, June 7, 2015, at the First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek, Iowa. The Reverend Kevin J. Freese will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery of Battle Creek, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at the Christensen – Van Houten Funeral Home of Battle Creek, Iowa. LaVon “Bonnie” DeJong was born on June 8, 1922, in Ida Grove, IA., to Hans and Mable (Carter) Hansen. She was raised in Ida County and graduated from the Ida Grove High School.
She married Robert DeJong in St. Louis, Mo., on June 15, 1941. They made their home wherever the USAF stationed them for 30 years and then retired to Battle Creek where they owned and operated B&B Hardware. They both loved winter golfing in Texas and summer fishing for salmon in Alaska.
Bonnie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek.Bonnie is survived by her children: Robert (Patricia) DeJong, Marion (Sharon) DeJong, and Deborah (Roger) Bean; her grandchildren: Michael DeJong, Elizabeth (Joel) Wall, Megan (Jimmy) Remmick, Marie (Seth) Mortensen, Sarah (Nate) Eischeid, Jennifer (Seth) Chamberlain, and Rebecca Bean. Great-grandchildren, Harrison and Emmett Wall, Nicole and Cory Hilker, Ella Eischeid, Eiley and Maylee Chamberlain. Great-great grandchildren, Marley and Brynley Smith.
She wished special remembrances to her niece Lois Jensen and her nephew Roger (Eva) Kropf as well as her many other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sisters: Fern (Walt) Riessen, Phyllis (Harold) Scott, Audell (Leroy) Kropf, Deloris Nielsen, Vera Mae Hansen, and Audrey Harrison.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Willow Dale Wellness Village for providing a warm and caring home for Bonnie's last years.
She will be missed.
