Louis Harry George Schable was born on September 12, 1931, in Mapleton, Iowa, to Carl and Freida (Weifenbach) Schable. Louie grew up in Danbury, Iowa, where he attended school and graduated from Danbury High School with the class of 1951.
Louis enlisted in the United States Marines. He was stationed in the Philippine Islands for three years and honorably served his country during the Korean War.
Louis married the love of his life JoAnn Christopherson on May 27, 1962. The couple made their home in Danbury and later moved to Battle Creek in 1977. Louis and JoAnn were blessed with two children, Kevin and Renea.
Working as a plumber, Louie later purchased the lumberyard in Battle Creek, Iowa, in 1972. After school and during the summer months Louie’s nephews would work at the lumberyard learning and following in his footsteps. Taking great pride in helping his customers, Louie was always there to lend a helping hand. Louie owned and operated Schable Lumberyard for 30 years till he retired in 2002.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek, Iowa. Louie enjoyed the great outdoors. Especially hunting and fishing with his children; as well as going to South Dakota prairie dog hunting with his son, nephews and their children. Kevin and Louie shared a passion for reloading shells. Louie followed the Iowa Hawkeyes in football and basketball. He was an avid fan for his grandson, Baylee and loved following his basketball career. Having a green thumb, Louie loved to garden and plant flowers. Louie and JoAnn loved watching the birds out their back window. They always had feed out for them trying to bring in different kind of birds. He had a passion for photography and would photograph anything that would hold still, especially his beloved daughter Renea.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 53 years, JoAnn Schable of Battle Creek, Iowa; children, Kevin Schable of Miles, Iowa, and Renea Steele (Ben Eason of Battle Creek, Iowa) of Norwalk, Iowa; grandchildren: Austin Schable, Baylee Steele, Kennady Steele and Delaynee Steele; sister, Minnie Berner of Seymour, Iowa; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
