In Memory of Elmer W. Susie
Elmer W. Susie, age 91, of Cushing, Iowa passed away on Friday, August 19, 2016 at Unity Point Health - Saint Luke’s Hospital of Sioux City, Iowa.
A Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at the St. John Lutheran Church of Cushing, Iowa. Rev. Wayne Pfannkuch will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., on Monday, August 22, 2016 at the St. John Lutheran Church of Cushing, Iowa. Burial will follow in the Cushing Cemetery of Cushing, Iowa. Military rites will be conducted by F. Roger Baumann Post No. 624 of the American Legion. Elmer William Susie passed away on Friday, August 19, at the Unity Point Health-Saint Luke’s Hospital of Sioux City, Iowa.
Elmer the son of John L. Susie and Della (Andresen) Susie, was born on March 23, 1925, in Battle Township, Ida County, Iowa.
Elmer grew up on the farm where he was born. He attended country school about a mile and a half away and graduated from Cushing High School.
He was inducted into the US Army in June of 1944 and trained to become part of the 10th Mountain Division. Elmer served his country overseas in Italy from January 1945 until the Germans surrendered there in May of 1945. He was honorably discharged in March of 1946 and awarded the Bronze Star for his service in combat.
Elmer married Eunice Helen Schug on February 16, 1949, and to this union two children were born, David and Debra.
Elmer and Eunice farmed together on several farms northeast of Cushing, near Douglas Center and finally south of Washta. They retired from farming and moved to Cushing. Elmer then drove truck for the Anfinson Farm Store in Cushing.
Elmer was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Cushing and served on the council and as a congregational president. He was also a member of the Holstein Amvets and a 72 year member of F. Roger Baumann Post No. 624 of the American Legion of Cushing.
Elmer was an enthusiastic gamester, enjoying card games with grandsons and friends, poker with his friends, and an occasional visit to the casino.
Eunice passed away on July 15, 1990. Elmer married Geraldine Dau on March 3, 1994 in Casa Grande, Arizona. Elmer and Geri enjoyed every winter in Casa Grande and continued to make their home together in Cushing for 22 years.
Elmer is survived by his wife Geri Susie of Cushing, Iowa; son, David (Linda Bergmann) of Spencer, Iowa; daughter, Dr. Debra Susie Lattner of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois; five grandsons and five great-grandchildren; brother, Vincent Susie of Cushing, Iowa; and sisters, Georgene Susie Barrier of Boise, Idaho and Phyllis Susie Sims of Denison, Iowa; stepson, Randy (Connie) Dau of Holstein, Iowa; seven step grandchildren and eleven step great-grandchildren; and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Eunice, and brother, Kenneth Susie.
Donations can be made to the F. Roger Baumann Post No. 624 of the American Legion or St. John Lutheran Church both of Cushing in honor of Elmer.
