Terry enlisted into the United States Air Force on July 16, 1965 in Omaha, NE. He was stationed overseas for a year in Okinawa, Japan during the Vietnam War. Terry honorably served his country for 3 years and was discharged on December 9, 1968. He returned home to Danbury, Iowa, where he worked various jobs before relocating to Sioux City, Iowa and started a career in maintenance. On October 30, 1976, Terry married the love of his life Barbara L. Johnson in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple settled down in Correctionville, Iowa and were blessed with three sons: Tim, Jeffrey and Andrew.  Terry had to retire early from working in maintenance at Security National Bank in 2006 due to health reasons.

Terry had a love for old vinyl Rock-N- Roll albums, he enjoyed listening and collecting them throughout his lifetime. He also enjoyed playing the harmonica, reading and watching SiFi, rooting on his favorite baseball team the Minnesota Twins, tending to his garden, woodworking and other projects. His favorite book was The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He usually read them through each spring and often said that his idea of heaven was The Shire. Terry treasured his moments spent with his family, grandchildren and friends.
