Dave (Maynard) Wayt, age 68, passed away peacefully Monday, March 27, 2017 at Horn Memorial Hospital with family members by his side following a short battle with cancer. He was born on August 15, 1948 in Sac City, IA to Don and Nonie Wayt. He was a 1967 graduate of Sac City High School. He went on to pursue his bachelor’s degree in history in Fort Dodge, IA and then to the University of South Dakota. As a child, he helped his dad at the family monument shop W. B. Wayt & Sons in Sac City, IA.  Over summer vacations they would spend time in Brainerd, MN where he would water ski and frolic in the sun.

His love of water extended through his adulthood where his wishes are to scatter his ashes into the ocean. One of his talents was playing the guitar. At the age of 16 he learned to play and played in a few bands. Some of which are the Jefferson Davis Band, FRB, and then the Iowa’s longest playing band The Senders where he was an inductee into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Other loves include planting tomatoes, making beef jerky, grilling, and the history of music. Maynard also may be known for his dirty jokes and sense of humor. His love for his children and grandchildren was magnificent. He was currently employed at Midwest Industries where he dedicated 26 years.

Survivors include daughters Marissa Wayt of Ida Grove, IA, Heidy Wayt and fiancé Michael Croke of Stuart, FL, Holly Wayt of Jensen Beach, FL, Sarah Wunschel and husband Adam of Ida Grove, IA, and Lesley Wayt of Jensen Beach, FL; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild on the way and many friends alongside.

He was also survived by his sisters Sally Gambetti of Ocean Side, CA, Wendy Staiert and her husband Ralph of St Louis, MO, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jerry Wayt and his wife Ann, and Daniel Wayt and his wife Barb, nephew Harvey Bradley and niece Chris Bosse.

“My deepest sympathy to the family of Maynard. I met Maynard one night at the Popcorn Plant when the Senders were having a practice session, I was dating the leader of the band Don at the time. That was the first night I'd heard Maynard play his guitar & some of his leads were so amazing sounding just like we were listening to a CD of the Original Bands. It was easy to see that Maynard had a love affair while playing his guitar, by his intenseness & expression while he performed. He didn't just play his guitar, his mind-set & guitar were connected as one entity captured in the song together as one, with nothing else on his mind but totally as he and his guitar were One exprespot being on for the accuracy of the leads of the Bands Music just like we were hearing a CD playing the perfection of the music we all heard & loved from the 70's. It was apparent he had a love affair while playing his guitar. Each time Maynard would play a lead in a song, he would capture the entire audiences' attention b/c of his accuracy, passion, & expression he performed, taking us all back to the wonderful memories of whatever song he was playing. Before I knew it I was a new member of the band playing keyboards and singing occasionally. Maynard and I especially had so much fun together playing and becoming good friends for our love of the 70's era music & would be so excited when Don would let us ad another Classic Rock song from the 70's. Maynard was very proud of his daughters & expressed his pride & love for them often, then adding his grandchildren as they joined the family also. When Maynard had to quit the band, I was lost without my friend that I had shared so much fun & love of music with. I thought of him often after that and sadly never made the time to visit him after that. But he is forever in my heart for the bond we shared for our Classic Rock music & memories that we shared for around 13 years of playing in the Sender with him. My deepest sympathy & condolences to his loving farmily & friends that will always miss Maynard. But we all have the wonderful memories of a very great Man.... Until we meet again Maynard, RIP, your friend Jenny Jackson Schossow ”

“I've known Maynard my whole life.We were best friends and always enjoyed doing things together! We used to hunt pheasant together and I'd always leave game on his porch. He loved eating wild game.We used to cut wood together so we could heat our homes.Today I was cutting wood and thinking about him! Took him and his twin daughters on the first visit to Stuart Florida! Dave really enjoyed catching fish and eating them for supper. We might not talk for a month or two at a time or we could talk ecvery day.Im been blessed having three of his daughter living in Stuart and watching them blossom in the lives. It was one of those relationships that were never broken.Maynard you We be deeply missed by many.Till we meet again god bless.”

“To Dave's family,

I just heard of Dave's passing and wanted to tell you what a great guy I thought he was. When we were in school, the teachers often seated students in alphabetical order, by last name, and so I often sat behind him in class. He was a lot of fun, and had such a great smile. I talked to him on the phone a couple months ago about our upcoming class reunion. He was off work on a "snow day", and so we visited for a little while. When I mentioned that I hadn't actually been around for graduation (I went to college that year), Dave told me the story of how he wasn't at graduation, either, because the principal told him not to come if he didn't get a haircut! Good for Dave that he stuck to his principles instead of compromising his first amendment rights. I didn't see him again for many years, until he was playing with the Senders at the all-school reunion, in 2005, I think. We visited near the end of the dance, and he laughed and said, "Can't you just marry me for a week?" I thought that was very sweet of him.

I will miss Dave at the class reunion, as I know his other classmates will...I think everybody liked him. He is gone too soon, but I'll bet he packed a lot of fun into his 68 years. I am sorry for your loss.”
