A Celebration of Life Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, November 19, 2017 at the Christensen-Van Houten Funeral Home of Ida Grove, Iowa. Burial at a later date in the Ida Grove Cemetery of Ida Grove, Iowa. The Christensen-Van Houten Funeral Home of Ida Grove, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Paula Lorraine Schau, the daughter of Paul and Evelyn (Mauer) Schmitz, was born on August 29, 1944, in Portsmouth, Virginia, on the naval base until her father was later deployed. At that time Paula and her mother Evelyn returned home to live with Evelyn’s parents in Wall Lake, IA.
On February 1, 1962, Paula married Marlyn Schau and to this union four children were born: Mike, Missy, Monte, and Mason. Paula enjoyed being a house wife and raising her four children. After her husband passed in 1992, Paula started working outside the home. She worked at John’s Grocery Store in Ida Grove, IA, the Senior Aid Program at Mid-Sioux, and enjoyed the most working for the Ida Grove Library.
Paula adored fall and loved to decorate for Halloween. She loved to watch the changing of the leaves and the bright colors you see at this time of year. Paula loved her cats and with a heart of gold took in strays. In her past-time Paula would like to take a trip to the casino to try out her luck.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Mike (Judy) Schau of Battle Creek, IA, Missy (Lyle) Isder of Early, IA, Monte Schau of Ida Grove, IA, and Mason (Alisha) Schau of Cozad, NE; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; brothers Tom (Sandy) Schmitz of Bluffton, SC and Jim (Vicki) Schmitz of Cedar Falls, IA; sisters Becky Jessen of Ames, IA and Sherry (Scott) Heppner of Primghar, IA; Aunt Doris Mauer of Cedar Falls, IA; sister-in-law Mareta Vermeys of Battle Creek, IA; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Paula is preceded in death by her parents Paul and Evelyn Schmitz; husband Marlyn Schau; two grandsons Brandon Schau and Eric Bauer; and brothers-in-law Fred Vermeys and Leighton Jessen.
