In Memory of Charlotte R. Schlender

Charlotte R. Schlender, age 79, of Battle Creek, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, March 11, 2018, at Horn Memorial Hospital of Ida Grove, Iowa.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 15, 2018 at the Christensen – Van Houten Funeral Home of Ida Grove, Iowa. The Reverend Chad Lierman will officiate; with Committal Services following in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, of Battle Creek, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at the Christensen-Van Houten Funeral Home of Ida Grove, Iowa. Charlotte Rose (Beckmann) Schlender, the daughter of William and Emma (Stork) Beckmann, was born September 22, 1938, in Madison, NE. She grew up in the Madison, NE area and graduate from Norfolk High School with the class of 1956. After high school Charlotte attended college in Norfolk and graduated with a teaching degree. She then taught country school in the Madison County area. 

On August 30, 1959, Charlotte was united in marriage to Lester O. Schlender in Madison, NE. The couple were blessed with six children: Gary, Darla, Lorie, Shelly, Bobby and Amy. The family made their home in the Atlantic, IA area before eventually settling in Battle Creek, IA.

Charlotte was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her and Lester enjoyed participating in couple’s bowling league as well as dancing. She enjoyed reading and sleigh rides. Charlotte was known for her green thumb. She had a love for planting and growing flowers as well as letting her grandchildren pick them. Charlotte loved spending holidays with her family and always had cookies prepared to share.

Left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 58 years Lester Schlender of Battle Creek, IA; children Darla Rios (special friend Randy Umland) of Schleswig, IA, Lorie (Keith) Bennigsdorf of Storm Lake, IA, Shelly (Dale) Schiernbeck of Ida Grove, IA, Bobby (Anita) Schlender of Arthur, IA and Amy (Perry) Venteicher of Holstein, IA; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents William and Emma Beckmann; son Gary Schlender; brother Vernon Beckmann.
