In Memory of Betty Jane Cullen

Betty Jane Cullen, age 94, of Ida Grove, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, at Willow Dale Wellness Village of Battle Creek, Iowa.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 2, 2019, at the Christensen – Van Houten Funeral Home, of Ida Grove, Iowa. Pastor Mark Aurand will officiate. Committal will follow in the Ida Grove Cemetery of Ida Grove, Iowa. A Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2019, at the Christensen – Van Houten Funeral Home, of Ida Grove, Iowa.  The Christensen-Van Houten Funeral Home of Ida Grove, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Betty Jane Cullen, the daughter of La Rue and Sarah (Scatterlee) McShane, was born on April 18, 1925, in Ida Grove, Iowa. She grew up in Ida Grove and in her youth worked as a waitress and gas station attendant.

On May 22, 1949, Betty was united in marriage to Richard Cullen. Richard was enlisted in the United States Marines which would take the couple to North Carolina and California before relocating back to Le Mars, Iowa. They later retired to Ida Grove, Iowa.

Betty enjoyed the great outdoors and had a love for nature. She liked traveling, fishing, animals, crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. Betty loved to meet new people and see new places. She loved dogs, cats and horses.

She is survived by her nephew, Marc (Maria) McShane; nieces: Vicki (Robert) McShane, Karrie McShane, Tammy McShane, Roxane (Ali) Merhi, Cathy (Darren) Hamilton, Susan McShane, Cindy (Stuart) Freeman, Michelle (Michael) McFarland, Michelle McShane and Kathy McShane; numerous extended nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents La Rue and Sarah McShane; Husband Richard Cullen; brothers Thomas (Carolyn & Amporn) McShane and Donald (NanHi & Joyce) McShane; and sister JoAnn McShane in infancy.
