In Memory of Kenneth Mac Hanshaw
Kenneth Mac Hanshaw, age 81, of Battle Creek, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2020, at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.
Due to the present mandated healthcare precaution, A Private Family Graveside Service will be held in the Mount Hope Cemetery of Battle Creek, Iowa, with Rev. Kevin J. Freese officiating. A Public Memorial Service and Visitation may be held at a later date. The Christensen - Van Houten Funeral Home of Battle Creek, Iowa, is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Kenneth Mac Hanshaw, the son of Wilbur Lloyd and Virginia Belle (McGlasson) Hanshaw, was born on December 9, 1938, in Fairfield, Iowa. He grew up in Fairfield and graduated from Fairfield High School. Kenneth attended Parsons College and served with the Iowa National Guard Band. He enlisted in the U.S. Army serving overseas with the Army Security Agency. Upon returning home he found employment with the Department of Public Safety. Kenneth was employed with the Iowa State Patrol for 35 years. He has enjoyed retirement since.
Kenneth truly loved the music of the 50’s and dancing to it. While attending a dance in Storm Lake, Iowa, Kenneth met Elizabeth “Liz” Schiernbeck. The two were united in marriage on June 7, 2002 and have made their home in Battle Creek, Iowa, since then.
Kenneth enjoyed coaching youth baseball in his younger days. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing for many years. He was also an avid bowler for many years until his health prevented it. Kenneth was a devoted Iowa Hawkeyes fan after working the games as a trooper and a Chicago Cubs fan for more than 50 years. Kenneth was a long-time member of the Eagles Club and the McNamara-Moore Post No. 61 of the American Legion of Ida Grove, IA. He also served on the Battle Creek City Council. In his later years, Kenneth enjoyed watching and feeding the birds and relaxing on the deck.
Left to cherish his memory include his wife Elizabeth “Liz” Hanshaw of Battle Creek, IA; son Steve (Tanya) Hanshaw and their children (Noah, Faith and Grace) of The Woodlands, TX; stepchildren Michelle (Dan) Volkert and their children (Jordain, Cody and Levi) of Correctionville, IA, Jason (Angie) Schiernbeck and their children (Dawson, Chace and Brody) of Battle Creek, IA and Shannon Schiernbeck of Battle Creek, IA; brothers Larry (Pam) Hanshaw of Grimes, IA and Leonard “Lenny” (Joy) Hanshaw of Chesapeake, VA; and sister Linda (George) Livesay of Picayune, MS.
He was preceded in death by his parents Wilbur and Virginia Hanshaw; two children Kenneth Logan and Kelli Ann; and two brothers Gerald "Gerry" and Tom Hanshaw.
