After the war was over he left the service to attend Coe College in Cedar Rapids to play football.
He decided he wanted to go into engineering and transferred to the University of Iowa, graduating in May of 1950 with his B.S. in Civil Engineering. While at college Richard met his sweetheart Alice Johnson of Manchester, Iowa. They were united in marriage on September 24, 1950 in Iowa City, Iowa.
