Gilbert Leo “Gil” Schoba, age 83, of Ida Grove, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at his residence of Ida Grove.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 2, 2022, at the Nishnabotna Cemetery of Manilla, Iowa.  Chaplin Robyn Plocher will officiate. A Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., on Sunday, May 1, 2022, at the Christensen – Van Houten Funeral Home of Ida Grove, Iowa.

Gilbert “Gil” Leo Schoba was born on May 23, 1938, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Antone and Anne (Kramer) Schoba. He grew up in and received his education in Milwaukee. After high school he joined the Air National Guard.

On November 20, 1960, Gilbert was united in marriage to Betty Lou Dammann. To this union three children were born. Betty passed away in 1995. Gilbert married Dorothy Rath on October 30, 1996, in Elk Point, South Dakota. They became a blended family of seven children: William, Karen, Scott, Jenniffer, Amy, Susan and Gary.

Gilbert worked for the USDA as a meat inspector for 32 years retiring in December of 1999. He was a volunteer fireman in Manilla for 20 years and a member of the Rough Riders Saddle Club for several years. During his retirement, Gilbert loved going on tractor rides, taking his grandchildren to South Dakota, and attending car races in Denison, Iowa. Gilbert and Dorothy enjoyed taking late afternoon car rides when she would get off work. He was a wonderful husband, dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa who will be remembered for sharing lots of strawberry cookies with his great-grandkids. 

Left to cherish his memory include his wife of 25 years Dorothy Schoba; children William (Candy) Schoba, Karen (Dan) McClelland, Scott (Michelle) Schoba, Jenniffer (Shannon) Hopkins, Susan (Bill) Henkelman and Gary (Tara) Kron, Jr.; 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; sister Pat Wentland; sister-in-law La Vern Schoba; brothers-in-law Don (Deb) Rath and Dean (Julie) Rath; extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Antone and Anne Schoba; his first wife Betty Schoba; daughter Amy Burcham; granddaughter Rebecca “Becca” Cedeno; grandsons Joseph Landon and Joseph Hopkins; great-granddaughter Addy Hicks; sister Marty Selby; brothers Jerry Schoba and Jake Schoba; his in-laws; brothers-in-law Jim Wentland and Les Shelby.
