Remembered as the gentle giant by his family and as “The Big Hurt” by his BCIG High School graduating class of 1999, Justin Allan Nystrom lost his courageous battle due to complications with Type 2 Diabetes on July 22, 2023, at his family home in Battle Creek, Iowa.

Justin was welcomed into the world by his parents Gary and Cynthia (Hare) Nystrom, along with his sidekick twin sister Amber on January 28, 1981, in Ida Grove, Iowa. Growing up in the small town of Battle Creek, Iowa where everyone knows your name, Justin was known for his willingness to always lending a helping hand. Justin never knew a stranger and was a friend to everyone he met.

From a young age, Justin developed a love of sports which was nurtured by his dad Gary. So it’s no surprise that he played football, was a 1st baseman on the baseball team, and acted as the basketball manager at times throughout his high school career. His passion for sports would lead Justin to become part of the Chief Kingdom “Go Chief’s”.

A man’s, man, Justin loved operating heavy equipment, driving semi’s, Ford trucks, racing, and was a dedicated hardworking, reliable, and loyal friend. A jack of all trades, over the year’s you may have met Justin, driving a cement truck, driving a grain truck, working construction, or landscaping.  Due to his health situation, he was forced into early retirement but this didn’t stop Justin from doing what he loved. You could find him on the Onawa Race Track as the Safety Coordinator every weekend in the summer when he was able and a recent high light for Justin was spending quality time with his family on a road trip to the Black Hills in South Dakota.

Justin was known for his witty sense of humor, swearing like a sailor, and down to earth personality. He treasured his title of uncle and enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews.

Justin has always been a fighter. From being born as a preemie twin, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, battling multiple illness due to his diabetes, to being welcomed into his Saviors arms and reunited with his father Gary. Justin will be forever known as the gentle giant, “The Big Hurt”, beloved son, brother, grandson, and uncle, who won the greatest race of all the one we call life.

Justin is reunited with his father Gary Nystrom; paternal grandparents Verner and Margaret Nystrom; maternal grandparents Richard and Shirly Hare; paternal uncle Jeffery Nystrom; along with multiple extended family members.

Left to carry on his memory are his mother Cindy Nystrom of Battle Creek, IA; twin sister Amber (Brian) Campbell of Hartley, IA; sister Vanessa Crotty of Fonda, IA; nieces & nephews: Owen Campbell, Maggie Campbell, and Holly Campbell, Kyler Crotty and Kallie Crotty; grandparents Jan (Lyle) Schaffer of Ida Grove, IA; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family.
