In Memory of Dwight V. Winquist
Dwight V. Winquist, age 90, of Ida Grove, Iowa passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at Morningside Health Care Community of Ida Grove, Iowa.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 16, 2014 at the First Baptist Church of Kiron, Iowa. The Reverend Bruce Kaihoi will officiate. Burial will be in Kiron Cemetery of Kiron, Iowa. Military Rites will be conducted by the Kiron Post No. 383 of the American Legion. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m on Sunday, June 15, 2014 at the Christensen-Van Houten Funeral Home of Ida Grove, Iowa. Dwight Winquist was born to Vernie and Lena Winquist October 7, 1923 on a farm south of Kiron, Iowa. Growing up on the farm, Dwight attended country school and graduated from Kiron High School in 1941. Dwight went on to further his education at Drake University for year before being drafted into the Army.
After basic training and communication school, he was sent to England in 1943 where he was a member of the 381st Bomb Gr. in the 8th Air Force. At the end of the war in 1945, Dwight returned home and was honorable discharged in November of 1945.
In 1946 he began farming with his uncle, Earl Linquist. Dwight met Beverly Fries and the couple were united in marriage on June 2, 1951 at the Arthur Baptist Church. The couple were blessed with two children, son Gerald (Jerry) and a daughter Julie.
Dwight became a member of the Kiron Baptist Church at an early age and has always been grateful for the spiritual guidance and fellowship he received there.
Dwight was very active in his community and surrounding areas. Throughout the past he was a member of the board of directors of the Arthur Lumber Yard, Horn Memorial Hospital, and Ida County Municipal Insurance Company in Ida Grove. A member of Ida County Farm Bureau and an active member of the Republican Party. Dwight was the oldest member of the Kiron American Legion Post No. 383.
Dwight loved fishing with his children and grandchildren. He followed their sports activities and 4-H. Music was very important to Dwight and he enjoyed singing in a men’s quartet as well as the church choir. Farming and feeding cattle were his life. Dwight was always interested in what was happening in the world. Watching the T.V news was not just an interest but a hobby.
When Dwight retired, he spent 21 years traveling in the southwest with his loving wife Bev. They made many new friends from all over the U.S. and Canada.
Left to cherish Dwight’s memory is his loving wife Beverly Winquist of Ida Grove, Iowa; daughter Julie (Darwin) Petersen of Ida Grove, Iowa; three grandchildren: Lindsey (Mike) Henderson, Megan (Eli) Prunchak, and Skyler (Sarah) Winquist; Five great grandchildren: Mariah, Mason, and Maddox Prunchak, Graci and Evan Henderson and one on the way.
Dwight was preceded in death by his parents, Vernie and Lena Winquist; son, Gerald “Jerry” Winquist; brother, John Winquist; sister, Mildred Copper.
