In Memory of George Hoffman, Jr.
George Hoffman, Jr., age 91, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Monday, March 18, 2013, at Holstein Good Samaritan Center in Holstein, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 22, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church in Ida Grove, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Chad Lierman will officiate, with burial to follow in the Ida Grove Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be held 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove.
Born September 11, 1921, in Ida Grove, Iowa, George Edward Hoffman, Jr. was the son of George E. and Fannie Mae Sheldon Hoffman, Sr. He grew up and received his education in Ida Grove, graduating from Ida Grove High School in 1939.
On December 31, 1942, George was united in marriage to Ruth Heilman. The couple met at a 4-H roller skating party. They were blessed with four children, George, Linda, Anita, and Danny.
George began farming at age 13 and farmed continuously in Ida County for 77 years. He was honored as a Wallace’s Master Farmer in 1985. He won numerous awards showing livestock at stock shows in Kansas City, Denver, and Chicago, as well as Champion Calf at Aksarben. He was active in his community, serving as township trustee, beef superintendent at the Ida County fair for several decades, and as director of Farm Credit Services of America for many years. He was 4-H leader of the Logan Hotshots for 26 years, and in 2002 was inducted into the Centennial Class of the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame.
An avid bowler, George participated weekly at Monday night league, and loved playing cards with his family and friends. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ida Grove.
Survivors include four children, George H. (Karen) Hoffman of Miami, FL, Linda (Art) Witten of Ida Grove, Anita Hoffman of Holstein, and Danny (Jackie) Hoffman of Ida Grove; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; his older sister, Barb “The Boss” Finch of Ida Grove; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ruth in 2008; and four sisters, Margaret Nicholson, Ruth Rohlf, Marjorie Rice, and Sarah Holst.
