William George Uhl, the son of George and Elizabeth (Livermore) Uhl, was born on August 20, 1946, on a farm near Oto, Iowa. In 1953 the family relocated to the Danbury-Battle Creek, Iowa, area where Bill grew up on the farm with his three brothers Marshall, Robert “Bob” and Richard.
He received his education through his sophomore year at Danbury Catholic School and later graduated from Battle Creek Community High School with the class of 1964. Following graduation, Bill worked for the Mapleton Grain Elevator.
In October 1965, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves in Sioux City, Iowa. He received his Army Medical Training at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. Bill was honorably discharged in 1977.
On April 6, 1968, Bill married his high school sweetheart, Charlotte Sales, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Danbury. The couple was blessed with two daughters, Lori and Lisa. Bill, Charlotte, and the girls made their home south of Battle Creek where Bill began farming. He took pride in caring for his livestock and looked forward to planting and harvesting his crops.
Bill was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek where he enjoyed worshiping and partaking in fellowship following church. A highlight for Bill in the fall was hosting the church hayride and returning for the potluck supper.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Bill always set a good example of life and respect for others. The most important thing in Bill’s life was his family. He was always their biggest supporter. He never missed any of the events his girls and later his grandchildren participated in and was their biggest cheerleader.
He loved farming, horseback riding, trail rides, sports, and game shows on TV. There were many nights of music, dancing, and an occasional evening of cruising in his convertible. He also was known for telling jokes and would always have the biggest grin on his face.
Left to cherish his memory include his wife of 55 years Charlotte Uhl of Battle Creek, IA; daughters Lori Roeder of Sioux City, IA and Lisa (Bryan) Quirk of Wall Lake, IA; grandchildren: Shelbi (Grayson) Roeder-Kielhold and Tyler Roeder, Shay (Troy) Quirk-Ransburg, Kaleb and Maty Quirk; great-grandchildren Callan Ransburg and Audrey Kielhold; brother Robert (Myrna) Uhl of Battle Creek, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents George and Elizabeth Uhl; granddaughter Lindsey Quirk; son-in-law Darrin Roeder; sister Leann Uhl.; and brother Richard (Theresa) Uhl and Marshall (Sheryl) Uhl.
